San Juan Estate Planning Attorney

Over 20 Years' Experience in Estate Planning & Probate

San Juan is the capital and most populous city in Puerto Rico, which is an unincorporated territory of the United States. San Juan was originally founded by Spanish colonists in 1521, who referred to it as Ciudad de Puerto Rico, which means "Rich Port City." San Juan is the second oldest European-established capital city in the Americas, after Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. To this day, several historical buildings survive in San Juan, with one being La Fortaleza, the oldest executive mansion in the Americas.

At the Law Office of Sylvia C. Lugo-Sotomayor, we are very proud to have our office located in beautiful San Juan, one of Puerto Rico's most important seaports, not to mention the island's financial, cultural and tourism center. Our founder, attorney Sylvia C. Lugo-Sotomayor has extensive experience in both U.S. and Puerto Rico estate law. We are highly dedicated to our clients and are committed to delivering only the most quality legal services in the areas of estate planning and probate.

Our firm is somewhat small; however, we do this intentionally so we can give our clients the personalized and dedicated legal representation they deserve. If you are ready to establish an estate plan that will afford you and your family long-term financial security, or if you need guidance through probate or aggressive representation during probate litigation, turn to our probate attorney who has over 20 years of experience to offer you.

Our founder, attorney Sylvia C. Lugo-Sotomayor not only has a Good Avvo Rating, but she is endorsed by fellow attorneys who can vouch for her honesty and her continuous demonstration of the utmost standards of professionalism and integrity in her legal practice. With her extensive experience representing clients in San Juan and parts of Florida such as Tampa, she can take on the most challenging probate cases. If your family recently lost a loved one, we can walk you through the probate process and ensure that all procedures are followed properly and all paperwork is filled out correctly. For those who wish to establish an individualized estate plan that will make the probate process easier on their family when they pass, we can help clients with all aspects of the estate planning process including guardianships, and wills & trusts.

Puerto Rico's requirements for wills are very different than other states in the United States. To illustrate, Puerto Rico believes in forced heirs. If you accidentally or intentionally leave a forced heir out of your will, your will may be considered invalid and unenforceable. If you die without a will, your assets and property will be divided in strict accordance with Puerto Rico's laws, and this may not be the way you would have wanted.

Our clients are very unique as are their families and their living situations. Some of our clients have family in Puerto Rico and Florida and some of our clients also own real estate in both places. With our ability to represent English and Spanish speaking clients in San Juan and parts of Florida, we are uniquely qualified to offer estate planning services to clients who travel back and forth frequently or who reside in both places.
